(GD&TĐ) - Năm 2011 sắp qua đi, cùng xem lại những hình ảnh động vật đáng yêu nhất trong năm để thấy rằng trên hành tinh của chúng ta có nhiều loài vật cần được sự bảo vệ, chăm sóc của con người.

A group of giant panda cubs nap at a nursery at the research base of the Giant Panda Breeding Centre in Chengdu, in southwest China’s Sichuan province. China has launched its once-a-decade panda census, trying to determine how many of the endangered animals live in the wild amid efforts to boost numbers. The census - the fourth since it was first launched in the 1970s - is also expected to ascertain pandas’ living conditions, ages and any change in habitat. According to the count a decade ago, there were 1,596 pandas left in the wild in China, with 1,206 of them living in Sichuan

Two fluffy emperor penguin chicks cuddle up, one putting its flipper around its companion. The chicks are beefing up ahead of moulting season when they can lose up to 30 per cent of their body weight. During this period they lose their fluffy feathers and grow swimming feathers. Photographer David Schultz travelled to Antarctica on an ice breaker and a helicopter to capture the photograph.

A zoo keeper holds baby orangutan Boo, a nine-month-old orphan, as he plays with a toy at the Madrid Zoo & Aquarium. Boo was born on July 5 2010 but lost his mother, Pundu, when he was only seven months old. Now 10-months-old, Boo is responding well to efforts by zoo keepers who are trying to get one of the female orangutans to adopt him.

A gecko licks the morning dew off its eyeballs. This gecko is found on coastal sand dunes in Namibia. The nocturnal reptiles collect water on their eyeballs in the early morning when a mist bank descends as cool coastal air hits warm desert air. Then they lick it off to have a drink. It took photographer Isak Pretorius three days in to get the licking picture, following gecko tracks across the dunes through the mist.

Four night monkeys squeeze themselves into a hollow in a tree trunk 25 feet above the floor of the Amazon rainforest. Photographer David Hemmings spotted the nest while trekking through the Amazon in Ecuador. Night monkeys, also known as Douroucoulis, or Owl monkeys, are the only truly nocturnal monkey species and have huge eyes to help them see.

These two monkeys appear to be enjoying a game of ’peek-a-boo’ during playtime in the forest at Monkey Forest Park in Ubud Bali, Indonesia. Just like human children, the pair entertained themselves while their mothers were grooming nearby. They were snapped by Anne Young on a visit to the popular tourist destination.

This abandoned black-and-white cat with a heart-shaped marking on her side has been named Bette Davis by staff at Gables Farm Dogs’ and Cats’ Home in Plymouth, Devon. She was handed in to the animal shelter last month looking dishevelled and emaciated after she was dumped by her previous owners. Bette is one of dozens of cats currently waiting to be re-homed at the centre.
